What you need to know about
Guitars
There isn't an instrument more prevalent in the world than
the guitar. Knowing about guitars isn't just important for
musicians. Everyone should know something about
guitars. Guitars have been around for nearly four
thousand years and were first inspired by the sitars of central
Asia and India. Europe developed different styles of guitars
throughout the Middle Ages and through today, guitars continue
to have a monstrous impact on contemporary music.
The main fact about guitars
that sets it apart from virtual any instrument is the multiple
approach you can take to the instrument. A guitar can strum a
chord, run a bass line or take the melodic lead in a song. The
only instrument that can come close to that versatility is the
piano, and, of course the guitar is much more portable than the
piano. It is certainly harder to strap a piano to your back and
walk down the street than a guitar.
The other thing that's interesting about guitars is how
widely their range has been exploited in a variety of music.
Any number of countries feature guitars in their music. And
certainly in the United States you'd be hard pressed to find
many bands that don't use guitars, whether it's a rock group at
the civic center, a bluegrass jam session at a coffee house, a
country revue at an outdoor festival or a alternative band in
an underground club, guitars are everywhere.
Guitars are comprised of a few main parts. The strings, are
obviously, what are strummed or plucked to create a sound. The
vibrations that result from the strumming or plucking is what
we hear. The body of the guitar is where the strings are played
and they provide the base of the guitar. The body always the
guitar to be held and the body also provides the appropriate
reverberation for the vibrations of the strings to be heard.
Finally, there is the neck, which connects the strings to the
body and as well the neck hosts the frets. The frets
demonstrate where on the neck of the guitar the fingers should
be placed. The difference in finger placement is what makes the
variety of different notes and chords.
Now that you know more about guitars, hopefully you have a
great appreciation for it. Whether you want to learn how to
play, want to have a better understanding about your favorite
bands or guitarists or
just want to know more about the most popular instrument in the
world, knowing as much as you can about guitars is never a bad
thing.
